From Unhappiness to Happiness

The attraction of guilt produces fear of love, for love would never look on guilt at all. It is the nature of love to look upon only the truth, for there it sees itself, with which it would unite in holy union and completion. As love must look past fear, so must fear see love not. For love contains the end of guilt, as surely as fear depends on it. Love is attracted only to love. Overlooking guilt completely, it sees no fear. Being wholly without attack, it could not be afraid. (A Course in Miracles T-19.IV.A.10:1-7)

There are only two thought systems to choose between as we go through the day. The ego thought system looks for separation by seeing differences and focuses only on what separate bodies say and do. The ego thought system, based on being separate from God and every brother, sees guilt everywhere. Guilt maintains separation, so the ego sees guilt as its salvation. The thought system of the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, sees past differences and knows that only Love is real. Awareness of Love’s presence brings gifts of peace, joy and everlasting happiness.

Today our practice is to pay close attention to which of these two thought systems we have joined with. We can tell by being mindful of our awareness of Love’s presence. If we find ourselves feeling upset, discouraged or not in a place of inner peace, we can step back, quiet our minds and ask the Holy Spirit to purify our thoughts to help us see past the images of separation to the truth that only Love is real. Vigilance and willingness to receive Holy Spirit’s help are the keys to free us from the bondage of the ego’s unhappy thought system of guilt and fear.
